RPI Printing, (formerly aBCD Printing) purchased a c.1900s brick warehouse in the Denny Regrade area to provide space for their new headquarters and allow for future expansion. S.M. Stemper Architects worked in partnership with the selected general contractor on the design-build project to rehabilitate and upgrade the interior and exterior of the building and to facilitate a change-in-use permit with the City of Seattle. The firm provided programming and space planning for a new printing production shop, office space, and employee and public waiting areas.
Specific design criteria included:
- Renovate two floors to provide finished office and production space;
- Define a new sense of entry; and
- Create a distinctive presence for this period Seattle brick warehouse building.
Building improvements included new mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire life safety systems, and repairing window glazing, roofing, and masonry.
